Jack Teal took the honours with a riding and training double at Sunday’s Buccleuch fixture at Friars Haugh, Kelso where a total of 46 runners faced the starter on the six-race card.Guess What set the ball rolling for Teal in the 2m4f Davidson Land Services PPORA Club Members Maiden Race, but it might have been a different story had long-time leader Bentley Road (Freddie Robson) not ducked out through the wing at the last when still just in front.Following Bentley Road’s dramatic departure, Guess What was produced with a perfectly timed challenge to take it up soon after touching down and quickened up nicely to win a shade cosily in the end by a length from Hurricane Harmony (Nick Orpwood), with Black Aquila (Paddy Barlow) a head away in third. This 5-year-old Walk In The Park mare, bred by J P McManus and shrewdly bought by Teal through a Tattersalls Online Sale last year, had been a shade unlucky on yard debut at the recent Berwickshire meeting where she slipped up on the home turn when still holding every chance.Teal doubled up on Whats The Solution in the 2m4f Brown & Brown Private Client Mixed Open Race.Given a confident ride on his favoured drying ground, Gillian Smith’s 8-year-old Beat Hollow gelding jumped and travelled well all the way as he came from last to first to beat Deerstalker (Isobel Mactaggart) by three lengths, after powering to the front at the final fence which he soared over in the style of a horse that had plenty left in the tank.He won twice at Overton last season and is likely to be heading back there on March 22, with a possible crack at the Aintree Foxhunters’ Chase on April 9 also on the agenda. After finishing runner-up on all three starts earlier this term, Hugo Moss (Paddy Barlow) deservedly went one better in the 3m Turcan Connell Restricted Race.Carrying the well known colours of John & Jenny Nellis, this progressive 6-year-old Scorpion gelding, a half-brother to the talented That’ll Do Moss, asserted on the long run from two out to the last and stayed on strongly to beat Theoldboggroad by six lengths in a good time.Winning trainer Alice Dawson’s husband John said: ”He wouldn’t want the ground any quicker and probably needs an even stiffer test of stamina. ”He will probably run next at the Middleton on April 4 and could then go over hurdles.”It was great to see Doreen Calder’s colours back in the winners’ enclosure following home-bred Flying Skipper’s victory on his first start for ten months in the 3m Saffery Maiden Race.Sent straight to the front by Natasha Cookson, the unfancied 7-year-old maintained a relentless gallop and found a bit extra when pressed by The Back Braes (Nick Orpwood) approaching the last to score by three-quarters-of-a-length.A delighted winning trainer Amie Waugh said: ”He galloped after racing at Alnwick a fortnight ago and will definitely come on for the run as I thought he might still need it today.”The winner’s dam Flying Central landed a 2m4f Haydon Maiden at Hexham in May 2015.For the record, Doreen rode 96 winners under all codes (72 Pointing & 24 under Rules), including 58 on the legendary Flying Ace. Her first win came on Naoise in the 1975 Berwickshire Members, and the last one on Flaming Sunrise at Balcormo Mains in April 2000.After partnering a landmark first winner under Rules on Brandy McQueen in a Catterick Hunters’ Chase four days earlier, Lucy Brown took her career tally between the flags to 20 with victory on Townhill in the 3m Jockey Club 0-110 Rated Series Conditions Race.Always going well behind pace-setting Watch Law (Nick Orpwood) and Not The Chablis (Jesika Rennie) throughout the final mile, Lucy’s mount led narrowly from Not The Chablis two out before extending his advantage on the run-in to score by a comfortable four lengths. This three-time winning staying hurdler for Tom Lacey, bought for £6,500 at Goffs UK Horses-In-Training Sale in May 2025, has been rejuvenated by the switch to Pointing since joining Lucy’s in-form Bonchester Bridge yard and was a popular local winner in the colours of her Racing Club.Whatdeawant (Lisa O’Connor) recorded a third course win and a fourth success from five starts this season in the concluding 3m Injured Jockeys Fund Northern Area Conditions Race. There was little more than a length between the first four as they took off at the last, and Whatdeawant’s stamina proved to be decisive as he asserted on the run-in to beat Harjo (Jesika Rennie) by a length, with Batman For Ever (Amy Coltherd) a similar distance away in third. The first 6 Northern Area meetings have seen an average of 7.13 runners per race, with an overall runners to individual horses entered ratio of 74.79%.The main action was preceded by Pony Racing, with all three contests sponsored by Browns Storage. The 138cm Novice Riders Race was won by Lindeth Wild Card (Willow Mechie), recent Alnwick scorer Ingle Harry Brown (Robyn Coulson) followed up in the 138cm open Race, while Judge Fox (Kaden Beasley) added another win to her record-breaking career tally in the 148cm Open Race. The next 2 Northern Area fixtures are the Lanarkshire & Renfrewshire and Eglinton at Overton Farm on March 21, and the Morpeth Races at Tranwell on March 28.
