A large crowd watched highly competitive racing at Charing on Saturday the only Point to Point in the country to survive the weather thanks to its “teabag” qualities according to our Area Chairman David Rhys-Jones who enthusiastically used the simile during his blue mic interview!
The 1st race Maiden was split when 16 of the 18 entered declared.
Giles Hopper Memorial Maiden Div 1, 8 ran, time 6mins 38
The first division was won by Luther ridden by Charlie Marshall and trained by Hannah Marshall Owners HC syndicate who made the long trip from Dorset. Luther led from the start and was well clear until very nearly unseating Charlie at the last. Charlie’s years on the hunt field enabled him to hold on and ride a strong finish. Farfromaway 5/2F trained by Francesca Poste was a length behind in second. Ice Prowler ridden by Gina Andrews and trained by Nigel Padfield was third.
Giles Hopper Memorial Maiden Div 2, 8 ran, time 6 mins 39
Protect the Future, ridden by Charlie Marshall and trained by Hannah Marshall, owned by The Chamings Family Partnership, took up the running after the tenth and won easily by 6 lengths. Double for the Marshall team both winners were sourced by David Phelan. Diamond Appeal trained by Bea Coward ridden by Martin Mcintyre was 2nd. Callmedusty 2/1F trained by Rob Varnham for the Gunshot Paddocks Racing Club, ridden by Seb Mead was 3rd 4 lengths behind.
Hugh Lowe Farms Conditions (level 2) 8 ran, time 6 mins 36
Grange Island 14/1 bounced back from pulling up at Horseheath the previous weekend to give Paddy Smith owner/trainer/rider his first winner since 2017. Lagan Valley trained by Julie Wadland and ridden by leading jockey James King was 2nd beaten 9 lengths. Holiday Fund trained and ridden by Josh Newman was 3.5 lengths behind in 3rd. Arctic Oscar the 4/6F trained and ridden by Gina Andrews was 4th. Secret Cargo owned /trained and ridden by Katie Featherstone was the only other finisher.
Gunshot Paddocks Racing Club in memory of Keagan Kirkby Mens Open, 6 ran, 6 mins 38
Al Gasparo 11/10 F trained and ridden by Josh Newman owned by Mr & Mrs J F Symes won by a short head to Dalamoi 11/2 ridden by F Robson owned and trained by Tim Vaughan. Douglas Longbottom trained by Bea Coward was 3 lengths back in 3rd. Joy of Life was the only other finisher ridden by Will Hickman and trained by Hannah Hickman-Jones. Crawter and On the Tide pulled up.
Ron Spicer Memorial Ladies Open, 4 ran, 6mins 33
Kansas du Berlais owned and trained and owned by Christopher Clarke ridden by Megan Bevan 6/1 led from the start and was joined 2 out by Fairly Famous 1/3 F they bypassed the last and Kansas du Berlais won by 3 lengths. Ryans Fancy was 90 lengths 3rd. Count Simon was pulled up.
The Sam Fuller Memorial PPORA Conditions Race (Level 3) 10 ran, 6mins 30
Noble Blue was a well backed 6/4f ridden and trained by Joshua Newman for Friends of Sylvie beating Call Me Early 6/4 joint favourite ridden and trained by Gina Andrews owned by the Signy and Marriage families. Skandiburg was 18 lengths back in 3rd. This win brought up Josh Newman’s 100th Point to Point trained winner.
The David Phelan Restricted race, 8 ran, 6 mins 34
The Dancing Tree 5/1 ridden by leading jockey James King trained by Alan Hill for the Woodway Partnership beat Validation owned and trained by Nigel Padfield ridden by Gina Andrews by 3.5 lengths. Time to Upgrade trained by David Phelan for Nigel Benstead and ridden by Seb Mead was 3rd.
An excellent days racing was enjoyed by the crowd, owners and trainers from all over the country. The South East Area have invested a lot of money replacing 4 fences in the last two years helped by a grant from the PPORA.
