King victory seals an unforgettable afternoon for Walker
Despite proving an uneasy favourite in the pre-race betting market, Sumkindofking cast aside any doubts that some punters may have harboured with an authoritative victory in the Hunt Members’ contest under 20-year-old Edward Walker.
The rider is no stranger to competing on horseback as a professional polo player but admitted to some nerves before going out for his first ever ride in a race aboard the evergreen 12-year-old, who is trained by his barrister father Christopher.
Walker said:” Luckily I have been taking coaching lessons from former jockey Darren O’Dwyer, who is assistant trainer to Tom George as I ride out regularly at his yard and it has all helped me no end.
“For much of the race the horse looked after me as he is real class like that and it was just a case of stalking the leaders in the early stages – he did the rest when I popped him the question going for home and its an afternoon I will always remember.”
Looking ahead, the rider added:” My father and I are keen for the horse to run next in the Pegasus Race later this month which forms part of the card at the Siddington point-to-point on Saturday March 25th.”
The bookmakers initially chalked up Sumkindofking as 4-6 favourite but he was easy to back all the way out to 7-4 as plenty of support arrived for eventual runner-up Glancing Glory , who was slashed into 2-1 from an early 7-2.
Leading trainer Tom Ellis and his jockey wife Gina Andrews made the trip from their Warwickshire base with three horses and the pair went home with a winner in the bag after General Arrow hit the bullseye at the expense of Southfield Theatre in the Mixed Open.
The runner-up attempted to make all the running and provide Lily Bradstock with a comeback winning ride following a spell side-lined with concussion following a heavy fall, but it was not to be as he had no answers when General Arrow swept clear.
Ellis said: “He loves top of the ground and that’s the long and short of it. He is a good little Open horse when conditions are quick and that was his ninth win for the yard.”
Eve Hobbs, trainer and rider of Tara Storm described the winner as “the horse of a lifetime” after he rattled off a hat-trick of recent victories when readily getting the better of his sole rival, Loughan, in what turned out to be a match for the Intermediate.
Hobbs said: “He is an absolute star as he is unbeaten in three starts for us since he was bought from France and is obviously very special to me and my family.”
However, there was a heart-stopping moment on the first circuit as the seven-year-old made a hash of jumping the sixth fence and Hobbs performed a minor miracle to maintain the partnership.
She explained: “I actually lost both stirrup irons in the incident but fortunately got them back before the next fence and from that point there was never an really anxious moment.”
Not surprisingly, a few offers to purchase Tara Storm have come in but Hobbs emphasised: “They have all been given the same answer that he is definitely not for sale.”
Urban Grit, partnered by Izzy Marshall, was impressive on his first start for Alan Hill when romping away with the concluding Maiden and the trainer was quick to point that the unexposed six-year-old “is for sale”.
Daniel Kyne registered his 13th career success when Count Simon took the honours in the Conditions (Level 2) race .The nine-year-old obviously enjoys his trips to Didmarton as he was successful on the corresponding card 12 months earlier.
The other Conditions contest on the card went the way of Cobra De Mai as he outpointed Skipthecuddles to provide Towcester-based rider Chloe East with her first ever winner.
