On Sunday 24th May Bratton played host to their second meeting and still the team did a wonderful job to provide a wonderful track with officially good to firm, firm in places after a period of warm weather. An army of volunteers ensured both spectators and participants were well provided for in the hot weather which saw many spectators enjoying tailgate picnics overlooking the finishing line. The veterinary team also went above and beyond to ensure horses had plenty of access to water across the site and were closely monitored after each race.
The opening race was the B Thorne & Son & RSM Beares sponsored Members Race in which Lauren Reed’s preview suggested there would be a hot contest in this race between Walkin Out and Ninth Wave which rang true when the bookmakers sent Walkin Out at evens odds and Ninth Wave at 6/4. Ninth Wave was last seen winning at Cothelstone’s evening meeting leading from the front and here at Bratton he was set to do the same, leading the running until pulling up three from home under Jack Stenhouse. First year rider Alice Frampton was looking for her second winner, with her first winner coming from Flete
Park on board Darren McAlinden’s Wick Green. Walkin Out was running fresh and jockey Anna Johnston has a great relationship with this mare who races keenly but on this day was kept held up in 2nd for most of the way before asserting herself from 2 out and won comfortably with Wick Green 7 lengths back in 2nd.
Next up was the Woolhanger Estate sponsored Restricted which saw 3 runners go to post. Dani Kenealy has a great record at Bratton Down and Troubleisontheway went off favourite in this race after winning at the previous Dulverton West meeting. The three runners were tightly grouped throughout the race with One Tree Hill leading the pack, a very keen Troubleisontheway tucked in behind and Miltownbridge the back marker under Zac Baker who had travelled down from the West Midlands to ride at Bratton Down. As they ran onto the 2nd last fence, Miltownbridge found himself outpaced back in 3rd as One Tree Hill and Troubleisontheway pushed on at the bottom of the home straight with Jack Stenhouse and One Tree Hill having the inside line advantage. Jack Stenhouse rode out a very strong finish on board One Tree Hill and won by 4 lengths for Tiverton-based trainer Louise Kittow, who only has one horse in training this season.
Unfortunately, the Ladies Open was the start of three walkover races at Bratton Down with both the Mens Open and the Maiden lacking declared runners.
However, the Kingdon Family sponsored Conditions L2 race had 4 competitive runners, and Dani Kenealy was looking for redemption with Emberscombe in this race after Troubleisontheway finished runner up earlier on the day. Also, with a point to prove was Dan Cherriman’s Envious Editor who finished 2nd in behind Galudon at Pepper Harrow last time out. Envious Editor ran keenly from the front and set a decent pace with
Emberscombe poised in second, Reflex Action in 3rd for Jo Supple and Presenting Point the back marker for Walter Barnett. At the 3rd last the race was split in two halves with a 5length gap between the leaders and Reflex Action and Presenting Point. Aimee Jones and Emberscombe jumped into the lead 2 fences from home and was soon clear, finishing 15 lengths in front. Walter Barnett rode a strong finish in 3rd on board Presenting Point with Reflex Action closely followed in 4th. Proud owner of Emberscombe, Keiran Johns, has enjoyed winners at both Bratton Down meetings this season and now hopes that Emberscombe will go to stud and produce more talented horses for him.
On Monday 25th May, Upcott Cross will host their second meeting and will see national champions crowned. Sadly, the 3rd Bratton Down meeting on 31st May has been abandoned due to firm ground and a lack of entries received, but we still have the last point-to-point of the season to look forward to, Umberleigh on 7th June where our Area Champions will be crowned.
