A large crowd was treated to a magnificent day’s racing at Tabley with some exciting finishes. Forty-one runners contested the six races, and the decent turnout was helped by the excellent state of the ground produced by the Clerk of the Course Richard Garton. Huw Edwards rode a double, taking the first and last race Maidens, courtesy of Star of Fruition and Jeux d’Eau.

The feature race was the Lord Daresbury Final which is a Conditions Race for the old North West Area, with £1,000 in prize money. Toby McCain Mitchell on Forest Chimes and Huw Edwards on The Creadan Rogue jumped the last two upsides, and it was a good tussle to the line with Forest Chimes getting the better in the closing stages to win by three quarters of a length. The nine-year-old winner has now won four in a row this season for trainer Phil Rowley and has proved a wonderful replacement for Diane Williams, who had such great success with Hazel Hill in recent years.

There was another close finish in the two-and-a-half mile Mixed Open, where Murray Dodd came with a great run on What a Glance to lead close home and beat Harry Myddleton on Polydora by three quarters of a length. The eight-year-old winner is owned by Ann Taylor, her husband Richard and their grandson Thomas Britten who trains the gelding at Alastair Raph’s satellite yard. They have had the horse since it was a yearling and it previously won a handicap hurdle for David Dennis.

The PPORA Conditions Race (Level 2) was won in convincing style by Tommie O’Brien on Buzzard Trix going clear in the straight to beat Captain Mc by eighteen lengths. Heidi Brookshaw acquired the winner privately last season for owner Deborah Walton, after it had won an Irish Maiden point at Castletown.

The PPORA Conditions Race (Level 3) was a Keepers Race for trainers who have up to five registered pointers in their care. Immy Robinson took it up on Urbanist with a mile to run and beat the only other finisher Poncherello by fifteen lengths. The former hurdle and chase winner was acquired last summer by owner James Welch through a Facebook advertisement. First-season trainer Ryan Holmes has only this horse at his yard near Stoke-on-Trent, and the conditions of the race were ideally suited to him.

The opening Maiden was for four and five-year-olds, where Izzy Marshall on debutant Carryonaway led at the last but was collared close home by the fast-finishing Star of Fruition ridden by Huw Edwards. Trainer Ray Owen bought the five-year-old mare for owner Len Parry, from Sheila Crow and she is a daughter of Fresh Fruit who was a former prolific winner.

The concluding Maiden was well contested with ten runners and Huw Edwards came with a well-timed run on Jeux d’Eau to lead at the last and beat Café Pushkin by a length and a half. The winning five-year-old is owned and trained by the jockey’s partner Laura Richardson and was acquired two seasons ago from David Futter of Yorton Stud.
