A huge crowd had an excellent day’s racing at Sandon in warm sunshine, where 44 horses ran, and the concluding flat race was divided on the day…
No watering was required, and the going was good to soft with an excellent covering of grass. Great credit is due to the Clerk-of-the-Course Mark Allman and his team, who were helped greatly by the local farmer Tom Seabridge over whose land the meeting takes place.
Henry Crow kept up his good recent run in the area with a treble, two of them trained by Joe O’Shea and Murray Dodd rode his first double. The first leg of Crow’s treble came on Willewonga in the Conditions Level 2 confined to horses from the old North West area. Huw Edwards tried to make all on Mr Snuffles, but Willewonga took it up at the second last and won by an easy six lengths.
In the Club Members Conditions Race, Crow made all on Roevin Star and won by eight lengths from Sergeant Brody, with Ettila de Sivola a head back in third. The winner is trained by Tim Garton and owned by his family.
In the two-mile five-furlong Conditions Race Level 3, Crow was always going well on Envious Editor, and brought him to lead two out and win easily from the staying-on Pallaskenry and the early leader Bandsman. The winner was following up his recent Bitterley win and was the second leg of Joe O’Shea’s double.
Crow tried to make most of the running on Lennox Again in the Maiden, but he was challenged at the last by Guy Sankey on Chasing My Dream who went on to win by a length-and-a-half. The two horses had come together at the last and Crow was fined £75 for improper riding. The formerly Colin Bowe trained winner was acquired by the trainer Laura Richardson at the Doncaster Sales last September for £4,500 for the jockey’s aunt Victoria Orchard.
The first leg of Murray Dodd’s double came in the Mixed Open on Mr Love where he took it up four out from Vinnie Lewis and won by ten lengths from Write it Down with Duke Arcadio back in third. The winner trained and owned by Nick Pearce was winning for the fourth time this season.
Dodd’s double came aboard the four-year-old debutant Good Boy for Tom Ellis in the second division of the Flat Race. He held him up until leaving the back straight and then sprinted clear to win by nine lengths from Churchman. The winner was acquired by Marcus Collie for brothers Bart and Warren Ryan-Beswick for £13,000 last May and is likely to be going to the Cheltenham Sales later this month.
In the first division of the Flat Race, Charlie Maggs took it up two furlongs out on Nordadler and stayed on well to beat the favourite Kallow Point by six lengths. It was a first winner for the 16-year-old in his first season having graduated from the pony ranks. Both he and his twin brother William work for Donald McCain and look to have exciting futures in the sport. The five-year-old winner was acquired by owner and trainer Claire Bonner (nee Allen) for €16,000 at Baden Baden as a yearling and is related to several German flat winners. This was Claire’s first pointer, and many enthusiasts will remember her over a decade ago when she was a top rider for Dick Baimbridge and others.
