There was some excellent racing for the North Staffordshire at Sandon on Easter Saturday, enjoyed by a massive crowd in glorious sunshine. Thirty-eight runners contested the seven races, as the concluding flat race was divided on the day.
There was a training and riding double on the day for Luke Price and James King courtesy of First Preference in the PPORA Conditions Race and a walkover by Spencer Moon in the Open. Additionally, there was an owning double for the Executors of the late Trevor Hemmings with Best Life in the Maiden and Milcree in the first division of the bumper.
Unfortunately, there was only one declaration for the Open Race where the fifteen-year-old Spencer Moon walked over on his seasonal debut. King took control of proceedings on First Preference with a mile to run and won by an easy eighteen lengths from Heaven Scent, completing a hat-trick of Conditions races for the season.
In the Maiden, King took it up on Tango Pete five out and had a good tussle with Toby McCain-Mitchell on Best Life, until the last where the latter had a better jump and stayed on well to win by four lengths. The four-year-old gelding had a previous outing when fourth in a bumper at Bangor, but trainer Phil Rowley said that he needed this trip and will mature with another season under his belt. There was an eye-catching performance in the first division of the bumper, where Lyall Hodgins on the five-year-old gelding Milcree sprinted clear from two out and won easily by nine lengths from the early leader Catchim. The Brian Harding trained winner looks a great prospect for next year when he will go into training with one of the leading national hunt yards.
In the opening Members Race, Felix Barlow ran out an easy winner on his father’s The Dubai Way by four lengths and a half-length from Duke Arcadio and My Friend Freddie, repeating his win at Bangor last month.
In the Conditions Race (Level 3) for eight-year-olds and over, James King made a bold move on You Know The Story five out and poached a good lead, but the mare having her first run for three seasons was caught at the last by the fast-finishing Hung Jury, who stayed on well to win by four lengths. The Francesca Poste trained winner was well-ridden by Amber Jackson-Fennell who persevered extremely well, having been well behind for most of the race.
The concluding second division of the bumper was a very exciting race with less than a length covering the first four. James King on Venus Queen took up the running before the final furlong and had a tussle with Toby McCain-Mitchell on Delilah Bucks on the stand side, while Murray Dodd on Mo Zola burst through to lead Sammy’s Guarantee on the far side, eventually beating the latter by half a length. Venus Queen who finished a head further back, was disqualified and placed fourth with Delilah Bucks being promoted to third. After a stewards enquiry, James King was cautioned for his careless riding which was deemed to be not intentional. The owner/trainer Max Young from Droitwich bought the four-year-old filly Mo Zola privately last summer.
