Trainer’s David Phelan and Robert Varnham both recorded doubles at Penshurst on Sunday 12th April, whilst two jockeys also celebrated their first ever career victory in the saddle.

Phelan’s victories came in the first two races of the day. The first success came when Carrickfergus who was friendless with the bookmakers and was sent off the 10/1 outsider having been tailed off or failing to finish in his previous four starts, won the maiden run over two miles and four furlongs by eight lengths. Despite being trained by David Phelan at his yard near Ashford, Carrickfergus is owned by former jockey Phil York who also owned and trained the runner up in the race, Noir Du Tay. The bookies favourite, Luke Price trained Lady Bee Great finished third and Wait At The Gate, also trained by Phelan finished fourth. The other runner, Can’t Buy Time pulled up at the penultimate fence having been the early leader in the race.

The level three conditions race was also run over the shorter two mile four furlong distance and the three runners took a steady pace from the fall of the starters flag, however, Phil York trained Happy Larry unseated Huw Richards at the third fence (first open ditch) leaving Sophie Davies trained Penniless who was sent off the even money favourite and David Phelan trained Carrolls Cottage who was priced at 5/4, to battle out the remainder of the race. The pair remained together until the eleventh fence where Carrolls Cottage started to open up an advantage over his rival. A safe round of jumping secured the victory, which was the first success for jockey Jack Etheridge, much to his delight.

Sadly, the mixed open saw only one declaration so was a walk over for Rob Varnham’s Imperial Esprit and jockey Harry Brown.

The restricted race followed and was another race to see the outsider of the three declared runner’s secure victory. Gardie Grissell trained Cossack Dancer led for much of the race after Luke Price trained Galudon who was the bookmaker’s favourite unseated James King at the second fence. Cossack Dancer had failed to show much in earlier starts in the season, pulling up at Horseheath in December and then finishing fourth of five runners at Parham two weeks previously, where he finished sixteen lengths behind his remaining rival, Hannah Hickman-Jones trained Creapapy. However, he continued to maintain a short lead over Creapapy throughout the race and when heading towards the closing stages of the race and the penultimate fence Creapapy tried to close on the leader but was unable to make an impression on the advantage the leader had, which meant that Cossack Dancer took the victory which was a first success for his jockey Albert Symonds.

The level two conditions race saw Rob Varnham’s Imperial Esprit sent off the favourite of the three runners, but he was denied a second victory on the card by Luke Price trained Inchidaly Robin who stalked his rivals until after the second open ditch where he moved

to take up the running and did not let either of his rivals pass him again. Imperial Esprit finished six lengths second whilst Gardie Grissell trained Goudhurst Star finished third.

The closing race of the day was the level one conditions race for novice riders and gave Rob Varnham and Harry Brown their second successes of the day and their second walk over of the day as Count Simon was the only declaration for the race.
