A sparkling treble for Somerset jockey Josh Newman was the feature of the Silverton meeting on a seven race card at Dunsmore near Tiverton. The rider’s three winners took him to the 16-winner mark for the season, elevating him into fourth place for the national title
Ed The Red set the ball rolling in John Norman’s colours, winning for the third time this season in the Exeter Racecourse Intermediate qualifier. A blunder at the second last failed to stop the seven-year-old, who repelled a spirited challenge from Grove Ash. “He will go on any ground and could run in the Exeter final. I also have my eye on the Restricted final at Stratford,” reported Woolminstone trainer Chloe Newman, the jockey’s aunt.
Paloma Blue was also completing his seasonal hat trick by beating course winner Humaniste when tackling Open company for the first time in a race sponsored by Heltor Oil & Fuel specialists. Josh Newman also trains this progressive seven-year-old, whose owners delight in the title of The Paloma Picknickers, headed by Stephanie Jones.
The rider’s treble was completed as Bang on Target took the Restricted sponsored by Davies Roofing & JP Burnell Roofing in the colours of Terry Hamlin and John Gardener. “My saddle slipped going to three out so I had to wriggle round quickly to get straight.” All was well in the end as the seven-year-old mastered Taraleigh and held the strong challenge of Jubertilee.
Newman’s good day ended in the mud at the open ditch in the Maiden sponsored by Stuart Luxton & Steve Yeandle which had to be divided on the day. He was deposited from the favourite Hearts Corner as Minella Jab went on to give Will Biddick his 29th winner of the season. This lightly raced six-year-old is trained by Danielle Kenealy and runs for popular owner Carol Lawrence.
The other Maiden section went to Sarah Rising’s Minella Nationwide, with Charlie Sprake’s mount gamely fending off the favourite Melvyn up the home straight.
Heidi Stevens rode her third winner of the season in the Gingerland Livery Ltd Novice Rider’s Condition race on Reflex Action who had run well at Milborne recently behind Paloma Blue. The winner is one of three pointers in the care of his rider at Brayford where she rides out for the Victor Dartnall yard. Owner Paul Nicholas was busy lambing and the rider/trainer remarked that, “Reflex Action would probably prefer better ground.”
The Hunt race with prize money donated by the Ladies of The Silverton Hunt gave 34-year-old Cullompton farrier Jack Veysey a welcome winner on 7-4 chance Ellipsism. He said, “It is my first winner for a few years. We bought him privately from James Ridley.”
