Herefordshire-based trainer Chris Barber sent unraced Rockatansky to Charm Park on Saturday with high hopes the four-year-old could make a winning debut.
He fulfilled that belief, winning the Goffs sponsored GB Pointing Bonus Young Horse Maiden Series race by three and a half lengths under Ed Doggrell and producing a polished performance in the process. Taking up the running with five to jump Rockatansky (Maxios) gradually shook off his five rivals, and while five-year-old Barbar Esko (Poet’s Word) ran well to keep the pressure on at no time did he look likely to reach the eventual winner.
Speaking at Chaddesley Corbett where he saddled a double which included Grace A Vous Enki’s win in the Lady Dudley Cup, Barber said: “Ed has told me the horse was having a bit of a look around in front, but he was fairly comfortable the whole way. He’s not run until now because he was sick at Christmas with a snotty nose and that knocked us back. He did a really good gallop just before that, we gave him a break over Christmas and then when we were ready to go again we had to back off.

“I wanted to run him in March at Charlton Horethorne [near his former home in Dorset] but had to be patient. Ed rides him at home and is a good judge – he’s been saying all the way through this is a nice horse.”
In third place at Charm Park was the Jack Teal-trained Swing By (Order Of St George) who was also making his point-to-point debut, while the time of the race was three seconds faster than the conditions event also run over two and a half miles.
Barbar Esko was making his first start for North Wales trainer Warwick Ryan-Beswick, having previously been trained in Ireland by champion point-to-point trainer Colin Bowe. He had run four times for Bowe without success, but the experience gained in Irish maiden races was a handy element against younger, unraced rivals.
Rockatansky, who Barber bought for €45,000 as an unbroken three-year-old store at June’s Goffs Arkle Sale in Ireland, is a full-brother to Teeshan, who was a most impressive point-to-point winner on debut in Ireland at four, and was then sold into Paul Nicholls’ yard from where he won a bumper.
Barber said of the day he bought Rockatansky: “That price was plenty punchy enough for me, but I fell in love with him and it was no secret that Paul loves his brother so he was an obvious one to try and buy. I also love the sire and have seen many nice young horses by him.
“My horse is now for sale. I think he’s my best four-year-old so it was good to know he’s gone and won like that. You can buy a dozen three-year-old stores and probably only one or two are going to be really good ones. I believe he is one of those. Hopefully he can go on and prove that for the next person.
“The obvious route will be to take him to Goffs in Doncaster [to the Spring Sale, May 18, 20 & 21].”

Having won a race in the GB Pointing Bonus Young Horse Maiden Series Rockatansky is now in line to land a £15,000 additional sum if successful in a developmental hurdle or chase within two years from a licensed yard based in Britain.
The bonus money is being provided by the Horserace Betting Levy Board and backed by the BHA as a way of highlighting young British pointers, encouraging owners and trainers to run them in the sport and encourage support for stallions standing in Britain. Four- and five-year-olds who win races in the series and are British-bred are eligible for a £25,000 bonus.
Eyton-on-Severn stages the final round in this year’s GB Pointing Bonus Young Horse Maiden Series on Monday, May 4.
