Scotch On Da Rocks (Lot 16) proved to be the pick of the British pointers who went under the hammer at Tattersalls’ Cheltenham April Sale, held in Newmarket today.
A four-year-old son of Fame And Glory out of a mare who was a half-sister to the highly-talented Treacle, Scotch On Da Rocks was sold to Tessa Greatrex of Highflyer Bloodstock for 80,000gns. He was offered for sale by Warwickshire’s Tom and Gina Ellis, who trade as G & T Racing. Tom trained the horse to win at Mollington earlier this month under Gina’s brother Jack Andrews.
Greatrex said: “He’s been bought for Ben Pauling on spec. He’s a lovely horse, but still a frame, and he’s an exciting one for the future.”
Tom Ellis, who bought the horse for £15,000 at Doncaster’s Summer Sale last year, said: “I wish the buyers the best of luck. We’re happy that he’s going to a good hotel, and we bought him for £15,000 and sold him for £80,000. If they could all do that it would be a great job.”
The Ellises also offered Kimble winner Another Mystery (Lot 28) who was sold to Newmarket trainer Lucy Wadham for £55,000, while Saturday’s Chaddesley Corbett winner Dondiam (Lot 35) made £50,000. Trained by Fran Nimmo he was sold to Dan Astbury and Tim Talbot, while Nimmo’s Adjournment (Lot 12) made £45,000 to a bid from Oliver Greenall and Astbury.
Two Yorkshire-trained horses found buyers. The Nicky Tinkler-trained Poet’s Corner (Lot 11) joined Wiltshire trainer Neil King for £38,000, while the Cherry Coward-trained Marton Abbey (Lot 7) went to Kim Bailey with a bid of £24,000.
The first horse into the ring, Here Comes Henry (Lot 1) left Chris Barber’s yard after selling to agent J D Moore, while his stablemate, the Dingley winner Lyrical Genius (Lot 15) was sold to Charlie Longsdon for £32,000. The Barber-trained Kimble runner-up Dash For Cash (Lot 31) became another Lucy Wadham buy following her £45,000 offer, while another from the same draft, the filly Kindofabigdeal (Lot 41), who won at Cothelstone, was sold to Craig and Laura Buckingham for £20,000.
