Former champion point-to-point trainer Dean Summersby got off the mark as a licensed trainer when saddling Jet Smart to win at Worcester earlier this week.
Jet Smart was an apt winner for the stable having become a star at the Summersby family’s Lifton yard on the Devon and Cornwall border. He scored twice in conditions races at Upcott Cross in May while the responsibility of Summersby’s wife Emma, taking his win tally in point-to-points to eight with three placings from 13 starts.
Initially Jet Smart was the mount of Darren Edwards, but when that rider retired at the end of the 2023/24 season the seven-year-old won races in the most recent season for Rian Corcoran and Lucy Brown. At Worcester he was sent off at 11/1 for a novices’ handicap chase, yet despite those odds he won in style under former point-to-point rider Bryan Carver.

Summersby was champion trainer for yards with seven or fewer horses in 2016/17 when saddling 17 winners, and he then took the title for yards with six to 14 horses in his final season of training pointers in 2023/24 when he sent out 18 winners.
