A quartet of friends from the equestrian community have teamed up to put themselves to the test, undertaking the demanding Three Peaks Challenge with the aim of ascending Scafell Pike, Mount Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), and Ben Nevis and completing it in just 24 hours, on the 9th to 10th June.
Their efforts are in support of two highly valued charities: the Injured Jockeys Fund and Devon Air Ambulance, and they are hoping to raise £10,000.
Meet the team that is responsible for this exciting fundraiser.
First up…. Martin Sweetland
“ I was born a dairy farmers son to a fourth generation hunting/racing family. I am a keen sportsman through and through and have ridden in point-to-points for twenty-five years, but I have now retired from race riding.
I am now producing Free Range Chickens for M&S, but still have a couple of pointers around for some fun. We are supporting two amazing charities, and I am really excited for this team challenge – bring it on !!”
Next up…..Jack Veysey
“I grew up on a sheep farm just outside Cullompton. After leaving school I went to work as a stable lad in racing for three years. I then went on to start training to become a farrier. After finishing my apprenticeship and qualifying as a farrier in 2015, I set out to build a shoeing round of my own. I bought my first point-to-pointer after qualifying and have been an owner, trainer, rider ever since. I’m looking forward to taking on this challenge and to help raise as much money as possible for these two worthy charities.”
Next up…..Ben Dixon
“I spent all my early years growing up on my parent’s dairy farm, the majority of time either hunting or pony club. After leaving school I went into racing and with a strong interest in point-to -pointing I started race riding at sixteen right through until I turned thirty five.
I’m now based with David Pipe as a travelling head lad. Unfortunately, at seventeen my mother had a riding accident on Exmoor and despite the incredible care and treatment administered by the Devon Air Ambulance she could not be saved.
Through my involvement in the racing industry, I have witnessed the incredible work the Injured Jockeys Fund does and as both the charities rely on charitable donations I urge as many people to donate as much as they can.”
Our final team member is…….James Bosley
“I am 49 years old and graduated from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) London in 2001 following Foot & Mouth duties earlier that year.
I worked for 4 years in predominately large animal practice in Cullompton, Devon. I then went and spent 4 years working in New Zealand and playing rugby (badly) before joining Ray Dilliway in 2009 to form Dilliway & Bosley Equine Veterinary Practice. As a vet practice we do a large amount of racehorse work from stud work, vettings to surgeries.
I enjoy working with the racing clients and their racehorses helping get results on the track. It is very rewarding to see a horse go and win following our input.
I was very pleased to be asked to be one of Martin’s team to attempt the Three Peaks Challenge in June – especially as it is for such a worthwhile cause as the Injured Jockey’s Fund. Fingers crossed we get good weather conditions and a rewarding sum of money for the charity.
The team will be completing this challenge on the 9th – 10th June – if you would like to support them in this exciting challenge and donate to two worthy causes the link to do so is here;
