Cambridgeshire trainer/rider Dale Peters took a relaxed attitude to Sunday’s impending debut of five-year-old gelding Natureofthegame.

‘He’s one that Toby [Hunt, joint/owner] and I would be happy to keep,’ summarises Peters’ view ahead of his horse’s run in Edgcote’s GB Pointing Bonus Young Horse Maiden race, but after a smooth victory plans have taken a different course. Shirley Anderson-Jolag of sponsors Tattersalls Cheltenham was on hand to witness the victory, an invitation to her company’s April Sale on Thursday was accepted, and now Natureofthegame will line up as Lot 8 at the home of Jump racing on Thursday. Traditionally held after racing at the two-day race meeting, the auction now starts at 1pm and can be followed via tattersalls.com.

Twenty-four hours later Peters was able to report the race took little out of his five-year-old, saying: “He came home, ate his tea, had a sleep and now he’s turned out in a paddock. It was a good weekend – our horses are carrying on their form really pleasingly.

“As I said before the race he hadn’t been off the farm, and while I would have liked to have given him an away day it didn’t work out. I did think that if any young horse could get away with it he could because his temperament has been impeccable from day one.”

The Eve Hobbs-trained Paris Man under Zac Baker made much of the running, with Peters content to sit in with the other runners. He said: “I didn’t want to be in no man’s land with him, but when I asked him to pick Zac’s horse up in the home straight he did it very nicely.” Natureofthegame, a son of former Yorton Stud stallion Pether’s Moon, won by 12 lengths from Paris Man (Jeu St Eloi) with 5/4 favourite Master Chuggy (Masterstroke) another 13 lengths behind.

Having been bred in Britain and as a result of a win in the GB Pointing Bonus Young Horse Maiden Series, Natureofthegame is in line for a £25,000 bonus should be win a developmental hurdle or chase within two years from a licensed yard in Britain. Winners bred overseas can win £15,000. The bonuses, which are the result of Levy Board backing with BHA approval, aim to highlight young British pointers, forge links with racing under rules and put another spotlight on stallions standing in Britain.

Thirteen races have now taken place in the Series with two more to come this season at Charm Park on Saturday and Eyton-on-Severn on May 4.

Foot-perfect: Natureofthegame is clear at the last on his way to victory at Edgcote (Neale Blackburn)

Peters is relaxed about the prospect of his winner heading to auction, saying: “We’re not massively fussed about selling him, and won’t be giving him away. Toby would like a nice horse and we have one, but he’s got a nice pedigree and is only going to improve physically. His biggest attribute is a great temperament.”
