Tabitha Worsley has returned to the amateur ranks in order to ride Top Wood in today’s St James’s Place Foxhunter Chase.
The partnership finished third to Hazel Hill and Shantou Flyer in last year’s race, and then won the Randox Health Foxhunters Chase at Aintree. Worsley subsequently became a conditional jockey, and with Top Wood’s trainer, Kelly Morgan, having taken out a licence, the partnership continued when Top Wood was switched to handicap chasing.
Asked when she decided to relinquish her conditional jockey status, Worsley said yesterday: “The second it was decided Top Wood was going back to run at Cheltenham. The plan is for him to run there and again at Aintree, and where else am I going to get rides at two Festivals with a live chance?
“It might seem daft, but I’ve done it purely to ride Top Wood.
“His run at Ascot [in November] was blindingly good and he didn’t run badly at Haydock next time out. I couldn’t bear to see someone else take the ride on him.”
Owned by Johnny Weatherby, Top Wood is 13 and the oldest horse in the race. Worsley said: “Hazel Hill is a year older too, and Top Wood seems in very good form at home. If he finishes in the top four he will have run a real blinder, and he’ll be suited by the soft ground.”
Alex Edwards, who won last year’s race on Hazel Hill, is looking forward to lining up on the Phil Rowley-trained horse once again. Edwards said: “He’s very well and hopefully he can do the same again. If you look at the Wetherby race [when Hazel Hill was second to Minella Rocco, the likely favourite for today’s race] he clearly didn’t run to his true form because his jumping wasn’t as good as usual.
“He needs to be handy off a strong pace and he should get that in the Foxhunter – I’ve never seen a slowly-run Foxhunter. I’m not sad that other horses are now ahead of him [in the betting] because it takes a bit of pressure off.”

The champion trainer-and-rider team of Tom Ellis and his wife Gina Andrews are putting their faith in the mare Kalabaloo. Ellis said: “She needs to improve a lot to win, but she deserves to take her chance. She’s run well at Cheltenham before, and if we have a bit of luck she might pick up a place.”
A field of 24 is due to go to post for today’s race, which is live on ITV Racing at 4.10pm.
