Jockey Start is an exciting new initiative giving aspiring riders their first taste of point-to-point racing. Launched in the northern area this season by former amateur rider Will Ramsay, the project is already making waves by pairing novice riders with experienced horses in real racing environments.

A Fresh Path Into Racing

With fewer riders entering the sport than in past decades, Jockey Start aims to nurture the next generation of participants. Ramsay says:

“The riders of today are the volunteers of the future. With fewer people coming through farming, who are going to be the secretaries and volunteers in 20 years’ time?”

The scheme not only develops riding talent but also instils a sense of commitment and community, as riders take on the responsibilities of training, fitness, and contributing to the sport they love.

How It Works

Jockey Start pairs novice riders with experienced horses to give them real race experience in a safe and structured way.

Veteran horses like these are provided by generous owners and trainers, while various supporters help with costs. Licensed trainers are also actively getting involved, offering horses for novice riders to gain experience on the track.

Riders’ Commitment

Riders accepted into Jockey Start are asked to:

  • Ride out regularly and stay fit

  • Cover jockey costs

  • Give something back to the sport through volunteering and participation

The programme is about more than racing—it’s about building the future of point-to-pointing.

Getting Involved

Trainers, owners, and aspiring riders interested in the scheme are encouraged to get in touch with Will Ramsay at will@ramsayfairs.com. Jockey Start is looking to expand beyond the north, offering opportunities for more young riders to experience the thrill of racing and become part of the point-to-pointing community.
